As the controversy surrounding the revival of Mumias Sugar Company continues to play out, Kakamega Senator Cleophas Malala has lauded the stand taken by Western Kenya leaders over the issue.

Speaking on Saturday 5th in Mumias East constituency, a day after the Devki Steel Mills Company, one of the investor that had shown interest in leasing the miller pulled out, Sen Malala said the leaders’ move to demand openness in the process came at a right the time.

“As leaders we are willing to have our factory revived even as from this month, what we are keen is just openness in the whole process, nothing else,”Malala said

Led by ANC party leader Musalia Mudavadi, the leaders had demanded for openness, transparency and accountability in the process of identifying the investor who will take over the management of the struggling company.
Saying that they are not opposed to the revival of the company, Mr Mudavadi sought to know how the receiver manager was to handle the bidding process of the lease.

Senator Malala now says the need for transparency and accountability remains key, and he has reiterated the position that the ANC Party leader Musalia Mudavadi took earlier this week saying high levels of transparency and accountability with regards to the process that will be undertaken by the receiver manager, will go a long way in enhancing trust among the farmers and the public at large.

Senator Malala addressing Mumias East residents in a funeral on matters Mumias Sugar factory, on Saturday 5th June.

“For this process to be smooth,we want transparency and accountability ,if this takes place then it will go along way in enhancing trust among the farmers and kenyans at large,”Malala added.

ANC Party through its legislators Lurambi Mp Titus Khamala had also raised concerns over the engagement that the receiver will use to get the investor gain the good will of the farmers so that the people don’t feel that there have been underhand deals which might not be very good for the revival of the factory.

The leaders have emphasized that the revival of the sugar industry is critical to the country and to the well-being and welfare of the people especially from the Sugar belt region who have for many years depended on cane farming
