Mumias East MP Peter Salasya has called on the government to prioritize utilizing skilled graduates within the country to address rising unemployment, instead of focusing on exporting labor. Speaking during a graduation ceremony at a Nairobi hotel where over 138 nurses graduated from Westwick College, the legislator criticized the current strategy of exporting professionals abroad.
“I fault the government for exporting labor. It’s better to create employment locally for skilled graduates rather than sending them abroad. Exporting people will not solve the unemployment crisis,” said MP Salasya. He added that even if the government exported 300,000 graduates, unemployment would persist unless systemic changes were made.
He encouraged the Westwick College graduates to use their skills to create jobs and opportunities in Kenya, contributing to the local economy.
Westwick College’s Marketing Director, Mrs. Rehema, expressed pride in the institution’s contributions to healthcare. “We are proud to have trained medics who will address the challenges in Kenya’s health sector. We also plan to expand our branches across the country to train more professionals,” she said.
Graduates shared their excitement about the milestone, with one student stating, “Being at this college as a mere student and now leaving as a medic is something I am proud of.”
The event highlighted the critical need for policies that support local employment and the role of education institutions in building a skilled workforce for Kenya’s future.
