Kuria West, Migori County – President William Ruto on Thursday launched the Kehancha Affordable Housing Project in Migori County, underscoring the government’s commitment to delivering decent, low-cost homes to Kenyans across the country.
Accompanied by Housing and Urban Development Principal Secretary Charles Hinga, the President presided over the groundbreaking ceremony for the project, which will feature 298 housing units and commercial spaces aimed at boosting local enterprise.
“This is not just a housing project—it is an economic engine,” said PS Hinga. “We are restoring dignity, creating jobs, and unlocking opportunities for Kenyans at the grassroots.”
The development, part of the national Affordable Housing Programme (AHP), aligns with the government’s Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA). PS Hinga, the chief driver of the initiative, emphasized that the program is designed to build inclusive communities while catalyzing local economic growth.
He pledged that the construction phase would prioritize employment for local youth, women, and artisans. “We’re building homes—but more importantly, we’re building livelihoods,” he added.
President Ruto reiterated the government’s resolve to address Kenya’s housing deficit by scaling similar developments across all counties. He praised the Ministry of Housing for the pace and scale of project implementation and assured continued funding and policy support.
Kehancha now joins other towns including Nairobi, Nakuru, Kisumu, Embu, and Machakos in benefiting from one of Africa’s most ambitious public housing programs.
