Kenya’s tourism sector is recording steady growth under the leadership of Tourism and Wildlife Cabinet Secretary Rebecca Miano, with over 33,000 tourism enterprises now registered and licensed across the country, according to the Tourism Regulatory Authority (TRA).

The milestone was highlighted during the annual Housekeepers Heads of Departments Association of Kenya (HHPAK) meeting held at Lake Naivasha Resort. The event drew hospitality professionals from across Kenya.

Frederick Omondi, Director of Standards and Quality Assurance at TRA, attributed the growth to CS Miano’s policy direction. He noted that the Authority has rolled out 18 key standards to improve service delivery and ensure sustainability across the tourism value chain.

“These standards form the backbone of how we regulate the sector sustainably,” said Omondi, adding that enterprise numbers are expected to continue rising.

Thanks to CS Miano’s push for reform and structure, the country has seen an uptick in diverse tourism ventures—hotels, tour operators, restaurants, guides, and Airbnb-style accommodations. A recent nationwide audit by TRA awarded 303 facilities Gold status, 342 Silver, and 346 Bronze based on quality benchmarks.

“We’re now ready for full integration into the East Africa classification system,” said Omondi.

Despite the positive trends, he acknowledged persistent challenges, including weak links between hotel investors and managers. The Ministry is working to address these gaps.

HHPAK Chairman Antipas Nyambok called for greater recognition of housekeepers, who are responsible for services that drive 60 to 80 percent of hotel revenue. “Housekeeping staff must be properly trained, supervised, and acknowledged,” he said.

Dr. Darius Wambua, a medical practitioner, emphasized the need for Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) training, citing a decline in workplace-related health issues due to growing awareness. “Stress often translates into physical illness and lost productivity. Education is critical,” he said.

Samuel Mungai of NEMKEM, a hygiene solutions provider, praised the post-COVID rebound in local travel. “Occupancy rates are up. Confidence is back,” he observed.

With improved regulatory oversight and a renewed domestic and international focus, Kenya’s tourism industry is regaining strength—driven by CS Miano’s steady leadership.
