As the world marked Mother’s Day, Dr. Ekrah Ndung’u, Chairperson of the Kenya National Association of Private Colleges, offered a deeply moving tribute to her late mother—blending memory, emotion, and a timeless call to cherish parents while they are still with us.

“This marks another Mother’s Day season when my mother’s phone goes unanswered,” Dr. Ekrah wrote in her heartfelt message. “What remains are the immense memories—of airtime and M-Pesa sent in love, of laughter, discipline, and unshakable spiritual guidance.”

Calling parents “immediate lower gods,” she urged society to honor and celebrate them in the present, not just in memory. “Let us learn to celebrate our parents when their stockpile of days is still within the unknown prevalence,” she echoed throughout the piece.

Her late mother, described as a spiritual warrior, disciplinarian, and unshakable life coach, shaped not just Dr. Ekrah’s destiny but that of many others. “She taught me presence, purpose, and godliness,” she reflected. “I am because she shaped me.”

One particularly poignant memory recalled her mother’s prophetic goodbye during Christmas 2019, telling her children Jesus would watch over them. “Indeed, years later, He has,” she affirmed.

With warmth and humor, Dr. Ekrah also remembered her mother’s celebration of her weight gain as a sign of prosperity—an “old-school thought,” she noted fondly. “No wonder my efforts to reverse it still fail!”

Now preparing to speak at the Global Mother’s Day Convention in Abu Dhabi, surrounded by mothers and daughters creating memories together, Dr. Ekrah’s reflection doubled as a reminder and a comfort: “A mother is irreplaceable. If yours is a memory today, may those memories heal you.”

Her final message: Honor while they live. Reflect when they’re gone. And always, love deeply.
