In the evolving landscape of devolved governance, Hon. James Gichuhi, the Speaker of the Nyeri County Assembly, has emerged as a visionary force — a leader redefining public service with integrity, professionalism, and a results-oriented mindset. A recent independent poll named him Kenya’s best-performing County Assembly Speaker, underscoring his rising stature as one of the most transformative figures in county leadership.
Raised in Kiawaithanji Village, Tetu Constituency, Gichuhi’s story is a classic portrait of resilience and purpose. He began his academic journey at Kiawaithanji Primary School, then progressed to Koelel High School in Gilgil. His passion for justice and governance led him to Moi University, where he pursued a Bachelor of Laws, followed by a Postgraduate Diploma at the Kenya School of Law. He is currently advancing his expertise with a Master’s in International Law at the University of Nairobi.
Admitted to the Bar in 2005, Gichuhi built a reputable legal career, beginning at G.K. Kibira Advocates and rising to Senior Partner at Wamahiu Kimeria & Company Advocates. In 2010, he founded Gichuhi Mwangi & Associates Advocates, leaving an indelible mark on Nyeri’s legal landscape.
In 2017, he made the leap to elective politics — a decision fueled by a deep desire to directly serve his community. As Member of Parliament for Tetu, he quickly gained acclaim for his development-first agenda. His nickname, “Wakili wa Bursary,” reflects his passionate investment in education: improving school infrastructure, widening bursary access, and championing equitable opportunities for thousands of students.
But his legacy goes far beyond education. In Parliament, Gichuhi led with legislative foresight — promoting policies on environmental protection, economic empowerment, and social justice. Under his leadership, Tetu saw marked improvements in security, including upgraded police facilities and floodlight installations in key centers.
On September 21, 2022, Hon. Gichuhi was overwhelmingly elected Speaker of the Nyeri County Assembly, securing 40 of 42 votes — a clear endorsement of his leadership by fellow MCAs.
As Speaker, Gichuhi has blended legal precision with political pragmatism to restore the Assembly’s focus on legislative integrity, oversight excellence, and citizen-centered development. His inclusive, calm, and visionary style has energized the Assembly, creating an enabling environment for policy innovation and participatory governance.
