Nairobi Members of the County Assembly have approved a motion that will allow the construction of an electric train transport system to reduce congestion and traffic jams.
The mover of the motion, Hospital ward MCA Patrick Mbangula Musili, introduced the motion two weeks ago seeking to see the development achieved through a joint effort between the national and county government.
Musili said the motion was timely as the electric train system estimated to cost KSh 2 billion will ease movement, boost trade, and create job opportunities.
The lawmaker said the project will also be a positive move towards environment conservation and reduce air pollution caused by motor vehicles.
“This project will come along way with so many benefits to our people in the city, they will save time due to reliable means of transport, and they will also pay less,” Musili said.
While approving the motion, Speaker Benson Mutura urged the county executive members to initiate a multi-agency technical committee to facilitate the implementation of the project in the next three months.
“This assembly resolves that the county executive should initiate this process with representatives from Ministry of Transport, Treasury, Kenya Railways Authority, National Transport and Safety Authority, Kenya Urban Roads Authority and Nairobi Metropolitan Services,” Mutura stated.
The motion was supported by over 110 members out of the 122 members of the county assembly. In Africa, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, is one of the cities that have installed and commissioned a 17Km electric rail transit line, running from the northern part of the city to its industrial areas in the south.
