Nairobi County’s Transport Committee, under the leadership of Chairman Musango Maithyia, has recently come under scrutiny for alleged collusion with Matatu Saccos and cartels involved in facilitating illegal passenger pick-up and drop-off points within the city.
Furthermore, Chairman has been accused of shielding this alliance within various committees, which has raised concerns among some members of the Transport Committee.
One recent controversy revolves around the allocation of a location meant for a zebra crossing for use as a Matatu stage, prompting a member of the committee to voice their concerns anonymously.
Moreover, it has been reported that the Pipeline member of the County Assembly has been exerting undue pressure on fellow committee members, allegedly driven by personal gain and greed.
In contrast to these allegations, CEC for Mobility, Brain Mulama, has expressed a commitment to dismantling the existing cartels operating in the Nairobi Central Business District (CBD) and restoring the appropriated areas for their intended use, such as a zebra crossing.
Mulama’s determination to rectify these irregularities is founded on the fact that a court order has previously prevented the eviction of these entities from their current positions.
This situation underscores the challenges faced in addressing these issues within the constraints of legal limitations
