Ruto: Apple has employed 23,000 Kenyans
During his recent address at the World Government Summit in Dubai, President William Ruto made a statement that has sparked discussion and raised eyebrows. Ruto asserted that tech giant Apple employs a staggering 23,000 Kenyans. However, data released by Apple in 2021 presents a different picture, casting doubt on the accuracy of Ruto’s claim.
According to Apple’s figures, the company boasts a global workforce of 161,000 employees, which includes individuals employed through third-party organizations. Notably, only 9.4% of Apple’s total workforce identifies as Black or African American, amounting to approximately 15,000 employees worldwide.
The disparity between Ruto’s claim and the reported data from Apple has has sparked reactions among Kenyans regarding the accuracy of the statement. While Apple operates extensively across the globe and undoubtedly provides employment opportunities in various countries, the significant gap between the number of Kenyan employees cited by Ruto and the total number of Black and African American staff within the company is noteworthy.
This discrepancy raises questions of whether Ruto and his communication team considers importance of fact-checking and ensuring accuracy in public statements, especially when made public on national and international platforms like the World Government Summit. In an era where misinformation can spread rapidly and influence public opinion, it is essential for leaders to prioritize transparency and accountability in their communications.
