Nairobi’s County Assembly has approved a motion to establish a virtual artisan bureau within Nairobi City County.
The motion, once implemented by Governor Johnson Sakaja, aims to vet, license, and connect artisans with potential clients in the county, generating revenue and creating job opportunities for youths.
This online platform, akin to mobile applications used for booking vehicles, will streamline the identification of individuals in the Jua Kali sector by clients. Samora Mwaura, the MCA for Clay City, emphasized that this initiative represents affirmative action by the government to ensure youth involvement in social and economic spheres.
Mwaura highlighted the importance of both levels of government supporting small, micro, and macro enterprises by establishing and licensing such platforms. This move aims to facilitate easy access to artisan services for constituents without the struggle of searching for them on foot.
The platform will vet and license artisans who qualify for membership, with services ranging from plumbing, electrical work, carpentry, welding, painting, to construction, all registered within the formal county portal system.
