The Kenya National Private Security Workers Union (KNPSWU) organized an intensive one-day training induction for shopstewards from Nairobi County today.
The training, held at the Union Headquarters in Hurlingham, Nairobi, was facilitated by Dr. Isaac GM Andabwa (OGW) and supported by the Central Organization of Trade Unions (COTU-K).
Dr. Andabwa emphasized the importance of equipping shopstewards with the necessary knowledge and skills to effectively serve union members at the grassroots level. “This is what I have been advocating for in terms of equipping our baseline representatives with knowledge and skills to serve our members at their doorsteps (shop-levels),” said Dr. Andabwa.
A notable feature of the training was that it was conducted by Trainers of Trainers (ToTs) who are shopstewards themselves. This approach not only promotes self-empowerment but also provides a platform for career progression among private security officers who are members of KNPSWU.
The training covered key areas such as the role and mandate of shopstewards, grievance and dispute resolution procedures, and group case studies on arbitration handling in relation to Kenyan labour and industrial laws.
Gladys Ogolla, Lincoln Yongo, and Joash Soita were acknowledged for their leadership and guidance during the intensive training session. “Congratulations to Gladys Ogolla, Lincoln Yongo, and Joash Soita for guiding and leading the intensive training session, and to all the shopstewards for the interactive session held,” remarked Dr. Andabwa.
The union plans to escalate these training processes to various branches across the region as part of their ongoing efforts to empower all members.
The National General Secretary (NGS) urged the trained shopstewards to actively utilize the skills they acquired during the training. “I urge those trained to actively utilise the skills acquired by putting them into practice and sharing the learned knowledge,” added the NGS.
The training session was officially concluded in the evening by Bro. Joash Soita, KNPSWU NATIONAL ORGANISING SECRETARY, marking the end of a successful and empowering day for the KNPSWU shopstewards in Nairobi County.
The union remains committed to enhancing the capacity of its shopstewards to ensure effective representation and support for its members across the county.
