Alice Kande Confirmed as Director General of Kenya National Qualifications Authority

LThe Kenya National Qualifications Authority (KNQA) has officially confirmed Alice Kande as its Director General. Dr. Kande, who has been serving in an acting capacity since December 7, 2022, succeeds Juma Mukhwana, who now serves as the Principal Secretary for the State Department for Industry.

The appointment was announced by KNQA Chairperson, Stanley Kiptis, who stated, “Following deliberations and careful consideration, the council appoints Alice Kande as the Director General/Chief Executive Officer for a five-year term.”

Before her appointment as Director General, Dr. Kande held the position of Deputy Director in charge of Planning, Research, Outreach, and Policy at KNQA. She has been instrumental in the development of various policies at the Authority, including the Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) policy launched this year.

KNQA advertised the Director General position on November 28, 2023, and received a total of 36 applications. After a rigorous selection process, the council shortlisted 12 candidates who were interviewed between February 27 and 28, 2024.

Dr. Kande holds a Doctorate degree in Business Administration (Strategic Management) from Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology. She also holds a Master’s in Business Administration and a Bachelor of Education, both from Kenyatta University.

In addition to her academic qualifications, Dr. Kande is a member of the Kenya Institute of Management and the Academy of International Business-SSA Chapter.

Prior to joining KNQA in 2021, Dr. Kande served as a Senior Researcher at the Commission for University Education (CUE). She has also taught at Riara University School of Business and Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology.

With her wealth of experience and expertise, Dr. Alice Kande is expected to lead KNQA with distinction and continue to advance its mission of promoting quality and relevant qualifications in Kenya. Her appointment is a testament to her dedication and contributions to the education sector in Kenya.
