Wednesday, May 29 – The local dailies are abuzz with news of Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s potential departure from the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) amid escalating tensions within the party’s top leadership. The Daily Nation reported that Gachagua is actively seeking new political allies and is in talks with The New Democrats (TND) for a possible partnership.
According to the Daily Nation, TND Secretary General David Musembi confirmed that Gachagua’s representatives have been meeting with TND officials to discuss a potential collaboration. “There have been talks, but there is nothing tangible to speak about at the moment. Maybe something will come out much later,” Musembi stated, indicating that the discussions are still in the preliminary stages.
Further insights came from Jimmy Kibaki, the son of the late former president Mwai Kibaki, who recently resigned as TND’s deputy party leader. He revealed that Gachagua had expressed interest in TND following his departure from UDA. Kibaki shared that Gachagua has already made significant moves, including acquiring a political party and approaching a governor from Western Kenya to join his team. “He even asked him to plan a meeting with a senior former Cabinet minister so that they can discuss future politics,” Kibaki added, hinting at Gachagua’s strategic planning for his political future.
Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga, known to be a close confidante of Gachagua, also corroborated the likelihood of the Deputy President’s exit from UDA. Kahiga’s comments add weight to the speculation that Gachagua is on the brink of a major political shift.
This development comes against a backdrop of internal conflicts within the UDA, raising questions about the party’s stability and future direction. As Gachagua explores new political horizons, the Kenyan political landscape is poised for significant changes, potentially reshaping alliances and power dynamics ahead of the next elections.
The political scene in Kenya is set for an intriguing period as observers and stakeholders watch closely to see how these potential realignments unfold.
