In his address, PS Mwangi emphasized the importance of good governance, transparency, and accountability in the officers’ daily operations. He highlighted that the financial resources allocated to regional offices are intended to facilitate the government in providing necessary services and ensuring client satisfaction.

PS Mwangi urged the officers to be proactive in their roles, offering extension services and closely monitoring mining activities in their regions to ensure all operations are licensed. He stressed the critical role of RMOs as guardians of mineral resources, insisting on vigilance to prevent illegal mining activities that deplete Kenya’s valuable resources.

“As a State Department for Mining, we are strategically placed to be a key cog in Kenya’s economic transformational journey,” stated PS Mwangi. “To give impetus to this sector, we are committed to supporting extensive and sustainable exploitation of this great resource. Our singular drive is to eradicate all criminal activities in this sector, including theft and smuggling of minerals.”

The four-day workshop covers essential governance areas, including procurement, internal audit processes, budget processes and linkages, operationalization of Artisanal Mining Committees, and mineral data generation to enhance mapping in counties. These topics are crucial for improving the efficiency and effectiveness of the State Department for Mining and ensuring sustainable management of Kenya’s mineral resources.

By strengthening the capacity of RMOs and emphasizing the importance of ethical practices, the workshop aims to bolster the State Department’s efforts in supporting Kenya’s economic growth and ensuring that the mining sector contributes positively to the nation’s development.
