In recognition of Uterine Cancer Awareness Month this June, Dr. Catherine Nyongesa, oncologist and founder of the Texas Cancer Center, emphasizes the crucial need for increased awareness and early detection of uterine cancer. As the most common gynecological cancer diagnosed in women worldwide, understanding its prevalence and early warning signs can significantly improve outcomes.
Did You Know?
- Global Prevalence: Uterine cancer holds the title of the most frequently diagnosed gynecological cancer among women globally.
- Early Detection: Identifying uterine cancer in its early stages drastically enhances the likelihood of successful treatment.
Early Warning Signs of Uterine Cancer
Recognizing the symptoms early can lead to prompt diagnosis and effective treatment. Here are some common signs to watch out for:
- Abnormal Vaginal Bleeding: This includes unusual bleeding between periods, post-menopausal bleeding, or abnormally heavy menstrual periods.
- Pelvic Pain: Persistent or unexplained pain or discomfort in the pelvic region can be a warning sign.
- Vaginal Discharge: Watery or blood-tinged discharge that does not correlate with menstrual periods should be checked.
- Pain During Intercourse: Experiencing discomfort or pain during sexual activity may indicate an issue.
- Unexplained Weight Loss: Sudden and unexplained weight loss can be a sign of various cancers, including uterine cancer.
- Fatigue: Persistent tiredness or fatigue that does not improve with rest can also be a symptom.
What You Can Do:
- Get Screened: Regular checkups and screenings, such as transvaginal ultrasounds or endometrial biopsies, are vital for early detection.
- Consult Your Doctor: If you experience any unusual symptoms, schedule an appointment for a thorough checkup.
While uterine cancer is a significant global concern, it’s important to note that in Kenya, cervical cancer remains the leading gynecological cancer. Hence, regular screenings and awareness of all gynecological cancers are essential for women’s health.
Dr. Nyongesa stresses, “Stay informed, get screened, and take proactive steps to ensure your health and well-being.”
