Dr. Ekrah Ndung’u, Chairperson of the Kenya National Association of Private Colleges (KENAPCO), recently shared her thoughts on the importance of self-focus and the pitfalls of constant competition during a hearty breakfast event. Known for her motivational speaking, Dr. Ndung’u continues to inspire and lead by example, breaking barriers and setting new standards in ambition and achievement.

In her address, Dr. Ndung’u cited Theodore Roosevelt’s famous quote, “Comparison is the thief of joy,” to frame her message on the detrimental effects of a competitive mindset. She reflected on how societal and cultural norms, reinforced by the education system and parental expectations, have conditioned many to constantly compare themselves with others.

“Have you ever felt the pressure and disconnection that comes from constantly competing?” Dr. Ndung’u asked. “This isn’t just about sports or business; it’s a broader critique of the competitive norms ingrained in our society.”

She encouraged the audience to consider the cost of this mentality on their self-esteem and overall happiness. “The constant comparison and pursuit of perfection can be crushing,” she noted. “Even if your classmate buys a plane, never lose sleep. Stay focused on your journey.”

Dr. Ndung’u emphasized the importance of recognizing and nurturing one’s unique talents and path, rather than getting sidetracked by the achievements of others. “Focus on you! Leave what people are doing alone; there’s no competition in a calling,” she advised.

She urged everyone to find strength and unity in their unique imperfections, rather than succumbing to the illusion of competition, which she described as a source of endless dissatisfaction. “Measuring yourself against others is a great source of low self-esteem,” she remarked.

Dr. Ndung’u’s message resonated deeply with those present, serving as a powerful reminder to prioritize personal growth and self-acceptance over societal pressures and comparisons.

From the desk of Vipasho, we wish Dr. Ekrah Ndung’u good health, peace of mind, and God’s immeasurable blessings and prosperity beyond human and temporal understanding.
