In a move to enhance water, sanitation, and irrigation services in Meru County, the Cabinet Secretary for Water, Sanitation, and Irrigation, Hon. Zachariah Njeru, EGH, hosted a delegation of Meru County leaders at Maji House today. The delegation was led by Buuri MP Hon. Mugambi Rindikiiri and follows a consultative meeting held earlier this week at State House, convened by President William Ruto with Meru County MPs.
The meeting underscores the Ministry’s commitment to bringing essential government services closer to the people and aligns with the broader goals of the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA) and the Fourth Medium Term Plan (MTP-IV) 2023-2027. The discussions centered around several critical areas:
- Prioritizing Water, Sanitation, and Irrigation Projects: Emphasis was placed on identifying and fast-tracking priority projects within the current financial year to address the immediate needs of the Meru region.
- Reviving Stalled Projects: The delegation and ministry officials agreed on the importance of reviving stalled projects to prevent the loss of public funds and ensure that the intended benefits reach the local communities.
- Packaging New Projects for Underserved Populations: Plans were discussed to identify and package new projects targeting underserved populations within Meru County to ensure equitable access to essential services.
- Equitable Distribution of Projects: Ensuring that all sub-counties within Meru receive a fair share of water, sanitation, and irrigation projects was highlighted as a priority to promote balanced regional development.
The Ministry of Water, Sanitation, and Irrigation remains committed to collaborating closely with Meru County leadership to deliver on these development goals. The MPs present at the meeting included Hon. Abdul Rahim Dawood (North Imenti), Hon. Dr. Shadrack Mwiti (South Imenti), Hon. John Mutunga (Tigania West), Hon. Daniel Kiili (Igembe Central), Hon. Dorothy Muthoni (Nominated MP), Hon. Julius Taitamu (Igembe North), Hon. Moses Kirima (Central Imenti), and Hon. Mpuru Aburi (Tigania East).
Ministry officials in attendance included Water and Sanitation PS Julius Korir, Irrigation PS Ephantus Kimotho CPA, Water Secretary Eng. SAO Alima EBS, and NIA CEO Charles Muasya, among other senior officials.
Today’s meeting is a testament to the Ministry’s resolve to ensure that the voices of the people, represented by their elected leaders, are heard and that their needs are met through effective and equitable service delivery. As the Ministry continues to implement the BETA Plan and MTP-IV 2023-2027, such collaborative efforts are expected to drive significant progress in improving water, sanitation, and irrigation services across Meru County.
