Strengthening Economic Ties

Both parties acknowledged the long-standing partnership between Kenya and France, noting significant investments by French firms in Kenya. Companies such as Total, Bolloré, and Lafarge have heavily invested in the Kenyan energy, infrastructure, and telecommunications sectors. These investments have not only created jobs but have also propelled economic growth, contributing to the development of the country’s critical infrastructure.

The Kenyan delegation highlighted the robust export relationship, particularly in agriculture, with Kenyan tea, coffee, and flowers being key exports to France. The positive impact of these economic activities on both nations underscores the mutual benefits of the bilateral relationship.

Economic Partnership Agreement

A central theme of the discussions was the Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA) between the East African Community (EAC) and the European Union (EU). This agreement has been instrumental in streamlining trade and investment flows between Kenya and France, further strengthening their economic ties. Both parties emphasized the importance of the EPA in fostering a conducive environment for trade and investment, benefiting both Kenyan and French businesses.

Security and Defence Collaboration

Beyond economic cooperation, the meeting underscored the strategic partnership in security and defence. Kenya and France have been collaborating closely on counter-terrorism efforts, with a focus on enhancing maritime security. This partnership is critical in addressing regional security challenges and ensuring the stability and safety of both nations.

Senator Jean-Luc Ruelle expressed France’s commitment to supporting Kenya in these areas, highlighting the importance of joint efforts in combating terrorism and securing maritime borders. The Defence Attaché, Mr. Denis Brisset, echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the shared goals and mutual benefits of enhanced security cooperation.

Looking Forward

As the meeting concluded, both parties expressed optimism about the future of Kenya-France relations. Hon. Nelson Koech noted the potential for further collaboration, particularly in emerging sectors such as renewable energy and technology. The French delegation reciprocated this enthusiasm, reaffirming their commitment to deepening ties and exploring new avenues for partnership.

This engagement marks a significant step in reinforcing the bilateral relationship between Kenya and France, highlighting the multifaceted nature of their cooperation. With a shared commitment to economic growth and security, the future looks promising for this enduring partnership.

The visit by the French Senators and the ensuing discussions underscore the strength and depth of the Kenya-France relationship. As both nations continue to work closely together, the benefits of this partnership are expected to extend beyond borders, fostering growth, security, and prosperity for both counties
