Dr. Moses Mwangi, a renowned medic and business leader from Murang’a, has expressed his support for the Government of Kenya’s 2024/25 budget, which was recently tabled by Treasury Cabinet Secretary Prof. Njuguna Ndung’u.
The budget, presented under the administration of President Dr. William Samoei Ruto, underscores the importance of a healthy nation by allocating a significant portion of the National Budget to address critical healthcare concerns.
Dr. Mwangi, a staunch advocate of the mantra “a healthy nation is a wealthy nation,” highlighted several key allocations in the health sector that reflect this commitment:
- Ksh 4.2 billion for the Universal Health Coverage Coordination and Management Unit
- Ksh 4.6 billion for Specialized Medical Equipment and Stipend for Community Health Promoters
- Ksh 2.0 billion for Free Maternity Health Care
- Ksh 861.5 million for Medical Cover for the Elderly and Severely Disabled
- Ksh 4.1 billion for the Primary Healthcare Fund
- Ksh 2.0 billion for the Emergency, Chronic, and Critical Illness Fund
- Ksh 28.7 billion for the Global Fund (HIV, Malaria)
- Ksh 4.6 billion for Procurement and Distribution of Vaccines and Immunizations
- Ksh 1.2 billion for the Construction and Equipping of Kenya Medical Training Colleges (KMTC)
- Ksh 2.6 billion for the Kenya National Hospital Burns and Pediatrics Centre
Dr. Mwangi particularly commended the allocation of Ksh 4.6 billion for vaccines and immunization programs, emphasizing the vital role of vaccinations in saving lives and reducing healthcare costs. He also lauded the budget provisions for cancer care, support for the elderly, and individuals with disabilities.
“By providing a budget to meet some medical costs of the elderly members of society, Dr. Ruto’s government has set the right tone, and this is truly a move that was long overdue,” Dr. Mwangi said. He added that addressing cancer and other lifestyle diseases requires a concerted effort from both the government and society at large.
Dr. Mwangi’s positive reception of the budget highlights the critical need for robust healthcare funding to build a healthier and more prosperous nation.
