The State Department for Correctional Services has placed a high priority on decongesting the country’s prisons as part of a broader agenda to reform correctional facilities. This announcement was made by Correctional Services Principal Secretary Dr. Salome Beacco during the official commissioning of a gate lodge, perimeter wall, and watch towers at Isiolo Main Prison.

Dr. Beacco emphasized the department’s collaborative efforts with the judiciary to implement Community Service Orders (CSOs). She encouraged inmates to seek reviews of their cases and to utilize probation officers’ support. This strategy aims to integrate released individuals into community work, supervised by county administrations and supported by probation officers, thereby enhancing both efficiency and productivity.

“Those who are released by the courts through case reviews are committed to community work with county administrations supervising offenders under the support of probation officers,” stated Dr. Beacco.

Addressing prison officers at the Isiolo facility, Dr. Beacco urged them to embrace transformative leadership and strive to enhance standards, aligning with her vision of establishing the department as a leading correctional service in Africa. The newly completed gate lodge, watch towers, and perimeter wall at Isiolo prison mark significant advancements in ensuring the safety and efficiency of the facility.

“The milestone marked today underscores the government’s commitment to modernizing correctional facilities across the country,” Dr. Beacco noted.

Dr. Beacco’s visit to Isiolo began with an address at the Isiolo Probation office, where she pledged her support to the officers. Accompanying her were Secretary Probation and Aftercare Dr. Christine Obondi, National Chairperson of Community Service Orders Lady Justice Lillian Mutende, and other senior officers from the State Department.

This initiative highlights the ongoing efforts by the State Department for Correctional Services to improve the conditions and operations within Kenya’s correctional facilities, promoting a more effective and humane justice system.
