Starehe MP Amos Mwago Maina has expressed strong support for the ongoing protests against the Finance Bill 2024, firmly rejecting the bill in its entirety.

Hon. Mwago emphasized that the will of the people must be respected and upheld, as the Constitution grants sovereignty to the people. “The will of the people must be listened to and obeyed,” he asserted, highlighting the fundamental democratic principles enshrined in the Constitution.

Mwago criticized the government’s decision to overlook public opposition to the Finance Bill. “It was a big mistake to overlook the will of the people because they rejected the bill from the word go,” he stated, pointing to the widespread discontent that has fueled the protests.

He also condemned the police’s use of excessive force in dispersing demonstrators, calling it shameful. “The use of excessive force by the police is shameful and unacceptable,” Mwago remarked, underscoring the need for law enforcement to respect the rights of peaceful protesters.

The Finance Bill 2024 has sparked significant public outcry, leading to protests across the country. Mwago’s statements align with a growing chorus of voices demanding that the government heed the concerns of its citizens and adopt a more respectful approach to handling dissent.

As the protests continue, the calls for respecting democratic rights and ensuring the safety of demonstrators remain central to the discourse, with leaders like Mwago championing the cause of the people.
