Lands Cabinet Secretary Alice Wahome, accompanied by Housing Principal Secretary Charles Hinga, conducted a site visit Friday morning to assess the progress of the Mukuru Met Affordable Housing project. This significant initiative is part of the government’s broader Affordable Housing Agenda, which aims to address the housing deficit and provide quality housing for all Kenyans.

  • 4,608 two-bedroom units
  • 3,024 one-bedroom units
  • 26 blocks of bedsitters totaling 5,616 units

During the tour, CS Wahome expressed satisfaction with the progress made so far, highlighting the project’s potential to significantly improve living conditions for thousands of Kenyans. “This project is a cornerstone of our commitment to providing affordable and decent housing to our people. The Mukuru Met initiative not only aims to offer shelter but also to create a vibrant and sustainable community,” said Wahome.

PS Hinga echoed these sentiments, noting the importance of the project in the context of the government’s housing strategy. “The development of these units is a critical step towards achieving the Affordable Housing Agenda. We are focused on ensuring that the construction is carried out efficiently and meets the highest standards of quality,” Hinga stated.

The Mukuru Met project is part of a larger effort to construct affordable housing units across the country. The initiative aligns with President William Ruto’s Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA), which includes housing as one of its key pillars. The project aims to not only provide housing but also to stimulate economic growth through job creation and local industry support.

The tour provided an opportunity for the CS and PS to engage with the project managers, contractors, and workers on site, ensuring that the timelines and quality standards are being adhered to. The project is expected to be completed in phases, with the first batch of units anticipated to be ready for occupation by the end of 2025.

CS Wahome and PS Hinga reiterated the government’s commitment to ensuring that the housing units are accessible to low and middle-income Kenyans. They emphasized that the allocation process would be transparent and fair, prioritizing those most in need.

The Mukuru Met Affordable Housing project stands as a testament to the government’s dedication to addressing the housing crisis in Kenya. By providing affordable, quality housing, the project aims to uplift communities and contribute to the overall socio-economic development of the country.
