The Law Society of Kenya (LSK) has issued a scathing condemnation of the recent surge in police brutality and extra-judicial killings in the country. In a powerful statement delivered by LSK President Faith Odhiambo, the society highlighted numerous incidents of abductions, torture, and unlawful detentions by the police, drawing a stark comparison to the oppressive tactics employed during the colonial era.
“Fellow Kenyans, once more we wake up to a sad day,” President Odhiambo began, referencing the recent spate of violent actions taken by law enforcement officers. According to the LSK, approximately 50 young Kenyans have been abducted, including Odhiambo’s personal assistant, Ernest Nyerere, who was taken from his residence early this morning. Other missing individuals include Shadrack Kiprono, Osama Otero, Gabriel Oguda, John Frank Githiaka-Franje, Drey Mwangi, Worldsmith, and Hilla254.
Odhiambo lamented the resurgence of such tactics, which were prevalent during Kenya’s colonial period. She invoked the legacy of Argwings K’Odhek, a lawyer who famously defended Mau Mau supporters in the 1950s, arguing for the universal applicability of human rights. “Fellow Advocates and people of goodwill, Argwings K’Odhek set the bar for us, and we must live up to his dream of a free and united Kenya,” she urged.
Addressing the international community, Odhiambo questioned their silence and inaction. “Are you proud of what is happening in Kenya? Is this your game plan for Kenya as a non-NATO ally?” she asked pointedly, calling for global attention and intervention.
The statement also recounted the tragic deaths of Rex Kanyike Masai and Evans Kiratu. Masai was shot dead during a peaceful protest on June 20, while Kiratu succumbed to injuries inflicted by a tear gas canister. These incidents followed the killing of a magistrate by a police inspector at the Makadara Law Courts, underscoring the escalating violence.
Odhiambo stressed that the issue is not isolated but part of a broader pattern of brutality. She drew historical parallels to the assassination of Pio Gama Pinto in 1965, a vocal critic of the then-government, to emphasize the enduring struggle for justice in Kenya. “If the spirit of struggle did not die with our forefathers who were enslaved, tortured, maimed, and eventually killed, what makes you think it can end today?” she challenged.
The LSK President also criticized dismissive remarks from some politicians regarding the role of Gen Z in shaping Kenya’s future. “We will no longer continue to be pawns in a game of chess,” she declared, signaling a firm stance against the oppression.
In response to the rising violence, the LSK has vowed to take decisive action. “The wave of police brutality on peaceful protesters, abductions, and killings of innocent Kenyans has pushed us to review our approach and involvement in this noble campaign for justice for all Kenyans,” Odhiambo announced.
She called on advocates, professional bodies, and all Kenyans of goodwill to unite in the fight for peace and justice. “Let us stand for Peace, let Justice be our Shield and Defender,” she concluded, invoking the national anthem’s powerful words.
