The Honorable Member of Parliament for Rarieda Constituency, Senior Counsel Dr. Otiende Amollo, will lead the United Kingdom Election Observation Mission as the country heads to the polls on Thursday, July 4.
“I welcome this opportunity to work with Commonwealth parliamentarians to observe the 2024 General Election in the United Kingdom on July 4,” Dr. Amollo said after being chosen to head the mission. “I know from experience that election missions play an important role in strengthening democracies.”
The mission aims to observe every facet of the electoral process, ensuring adherence to international obligations, commitments, and standards governing democratic elections. “Our role will be to observe the democratic process, share our findings, and make recommendations in line with international practices,” Dr. Amollo stated.
Parliamentarians from 18 nations across the Commonwealth, including Malawi, St. Lucia, the State of Alderney, New South Wales, Seychelles, and Trinidad and Tobago, were selected to be impartial observers of the voting process. MPs from the State Assembly of Jersey, Grenada, Sri Lanka, the Parliament of Turks and Caicos, Malta, and Lesotho also form part of the mission.
“We look forward to observing electoral practices in a variety of contexts, regions, and nations, reflecting the diversity of the United Kingdom itself,” Dr. Amollo said.
