The State Department for Correctional Services is considering the adoption of steel building technology to tackle housing challenges within its facilities. On Thursday, Principal Secretary Dr. Salome Beacco met with representatives from Safal Buildings to discuss potential collaborations aimed at accelerating the construction of durable and flexible structures for workshops and staff housing.

The partnership between Safal Buildings and the State Department has already yielded significant results. Successful projects include the Chandaria Lang’ata, Meru, Shimo La Tewa, and Kisumu Women’s Prison Workshops, which have provided inmates with valuable skills in baking and tailoring.

Dr. Beacco commended the ongoing collaboration, noting its contribution to the Bottom-up Economic Transformation Agenda. This initiative aligns with the department’s broader goal of modernizing correctional facilities to support its reform agenda.

During the meeting, Dr. Beacco highlighted the importance of training both prison staff and inmates in steel-building technologies to ensure the program’s sustainability. She expressed openness to incorporating such training as part of the ongoing efforts.

The PS also called for additional partners to support the department’s housing initiatives to achieve its goal of modernized correctional facilities.

In a related development, the State Department is enhancing financial literacy training among its staff to address mental health challenges. This effort was discussed during a meeting with representatives from Liberty Group Limited. Dr. Beacco emphasized that poor financial management is often a significant factor in mental health issues among staff.

The discussions with Liberty Group focused on strengthening partnerships in staff training on financial literacy, property management, and retirement planning.

The State Department is set to host this year’s Correctional Service Week from October 22nd to 24th. The event will feature the theme “Mental Health and Wellness for Effective Service Delivery,” with financial management being a key topic of discussion.
