The Kenya Sex Workers Alliance has strongly opposed any attempts to increase the tax on condoms, highlighting the essential role that condoms play in preventing the spread of infections, particularly HIV, and in avoiding unwanted pregnancies.
The association’s leadership argues that increasing the tax on condoms would have detrimental effects on public health.
“The latex sheath is an instrumental tool that helps prevent the spread of infection, particularly HIV, not forgetting unwanted pregnancy,” the association stated.
They urged the government to consider providing condoms free of charge as a cost-effective measure to prevent sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and reduce the financial burden of treating preventable conditions.
The association’s stance underscores the critical need for accessible and affordable preventive healthcare measures, advocating for policies that prioritize public health over revenue generation through taxation.
