The Correctional Services Principal Secretary Dr. Salome Beacco has announced that the state department is exploring strategic partnerships aimed at achieving excellence in correctional services.
This announcement came during a meeting with the European Union (EU) Ambassador to Kenya, Henriette Geiger, and Programme Manager Line Urban at the State Department headquarters.
During the meeting, Dr. Beacco highlighted the critical role of partnerships in enhancing the correctional services sector, which is a fundamental part of the criminal justice system. She stressed the necessity of modernizing Kenya’s correctional facilities to improve living conditions for inmates and ensure effective rehabilitation.
“Our correctional facilities are in dire need of modernization to improve the living conditions of the inmates and ensure effective rehabilitation. Partnering with the EU will bring in professional expertise which is essential for this transformation,” Dr. Beacco noted.
The discussion centered on leveraging the EU’s expertise and resources to modernize Kenya’s correctional facilities and enhance rehabilitation programs for inmates. This includes implementing a comprehensive Information and Communication Technology (ICT) system to digitize inmates’ records and administrative processes, which is expected to streamline operations, track inmate progress, and improve overall management of correctional centers.
The EU Ambassador expressed a willingness to support Kenya’s efforts to improve its correctional facilities. This support includes enhancing vocational training and rehabilitation programs for offenders, aiming to prepare them for reintegration into society.
“An efficient ICT system will not only enhance internal processes but also facilitate better coordination with other government departments, as well as support our efforts in rehabilitating inmates and preparing them for reintegration back into society,” stated Dr. Beacco.
The PS emphasized that appropriate ICT infrastructure will streamline operations, improve the efficiency of correctional centers, and support the broader efforts in rehabilitating inmates.
The meeting signifies a step forward in Kenya’s commitment to reform its correctional services through strategic international partnerships, ensuring better management, improved living conditions, and effective rehabilitation for inmates.
