The National Biodiversity Coordination Mechanism (NBCM) was officially launched at the Serena Hotel, Nairobi.
The event saw the participation of key environmental stakeholders, including the Principal Secretary of the State Department for Environment and Climate Change, alongside Dr. Erustus Kanga, the Director General of the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS).
Kenya, recognized globally as a mega-biodiverse nation, is endowed with an immense wealth of natural capital. This includes diverse wildlife, expansive forests, aquatic systems, and rich agricultural biodiversity. These natural assets are not only vital to the country’s economic resilience but also crucial to the well-being and quality of life of its citizens. Preserving this biodiversity is essential for maintaining the nation’s prosperity and ensuring a sustainable future.
The foundation for such conservation efforts is deeply rooted in the Constitution of Kenya, particularly Chapter 5, Article 6(1), which mandates the management and conservation of natural resources, including genetic resources, and highlights the importance of public participation. Kenya’s Vision 2030 further aligns with these principles by outlining a strategic pathway for future economic growth that is deeply intertwined with the responsible stewardship of natural resources.
The NBCM has been established with the core objective of enhancing and streamlining the coordination of biodiversity-related activities across the nation. This mechanism aims to support Kenya in fulfilling its national and international commitments to biodiversity conservation, ensuring the sustainable use of these vital resources for the benefit of both current and future generations.
During the launch, Dr. Erustus Kanga, Director General of KWS, emphasized the agency’s critical role as the custodian of a substantial portion of Kenya’s biodiversity. He reiterated KWS’s steadfast commitment to working in partnership with all stakeholders involved in the NBCM. Dr. Kanga expressed confidence that through collaborative efforts, the ambitious goals set by this transformative initiative would be achieved, paving the way for a sustainable and prosperous future for Kenya.
The establishment of the NBCM marks a milestone in Kenya’s ongoing efforts to conserve its rich natural heritage and underscores the country’s leadership in global biodiversity conservation efforts.
