The completion of the Dongo Kundu Bypass in Kenya’s coastal region is generating excitement within the tourism industry, particularly among tour and travel operators who anticipate a significant boost to their business. The new 17-kilometer bypass, a remarkable feat of engineering, is expected to revolutionize travel to the South Coast, making it more accessible and attracting more tourists to the area.

One of the most striking features of the bypass is the Mteza Bridge, now the longest bridge in Kenya, spanning approximately 1.4 kilometers. The project also includes the Tsunza Viaduct, measuring 690 meters, and the Mwache Bridge, which is 660 meters long. These structures are set to drastically reduce travel time, with the journey from Moi International Airport or the SGR Miritini station to Diani Beach now taking less than an hour—compared to the previous five-hour ordeal via the Likoni Crossing Channel.

The bypass is not just a boon for travel efficiency; it also opens up significant economic opportunities. The development of the Dongo Kundu Special Economic Zone and the Mombasa Gate Bridge is expected to follow, further enhancing the region’s economic landscape.

Pancras Karema, the Founder, Managing Director, and Chief Executive Officer of Expeditions Maasai Safaris—Kenya’s leading tour and travel company—expressed his optimism about the new infrastructure. Karema, whose company has over nine years of experience in providing stress-free holiday experiences, views the bypass as a game-changer for tourism in the South Coast.

“This is a welcome development which presents a unique opportunity to tap into the untouched and underexploited tourism potential in the South Coast,” said Karema. He also highlighted the company’s innovative “Commit Kidogo Kidogo” savings plan, which allows clients to save incrementally for their holidays. “We welcome our clients to take advantage of our Commit Kidogo Kidogo to plan their December holiday early in advance. With this plan, one can save in bits and eventually enjoy a holiday without having to dig deep into their pockets.”

The completion of the Dongo Kundu Bypass marks a significant milestone for Kenya’s coastal tourism sector. As accessibility improves, local and foreign tourists alike are expected to flock to the region, bringing a much-needed boost to the industry and contributing to the broader economic development of the area. With industry leaders like Karema at the helm, the future looks bright for tourism in the South Coast.
