Mike Makarina, a prominent leader from Meru known for his bold and outspoken nature, has weighed in on the evolving political landscape of the Mount Kenya region. In a recent statement, Makarina emphasized the need for inclusivity among all stakeholders to achieve a unified region, stressing the importance of respect for all political players.

The Mount Kenya region, which played a pivotal role in the last election by delivering over 50% of the total votes cast nationwide to President William Ruto, remains a critical area in Kenya’s political dynamics. However, Makarina has voiced concerns over the perceived exclusion of Interior Cabinet Secretary Abraham Kithure Kindiki from regional political activities led by Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.

Makarina highlighted the significance of Prof. Kindiki, who he describes as the de facto Meru Kingpin and a key confidant of President Ruto. Makarina underscored the trust the President has placed in Kindiki, particularly by assigning him the crucial role of overseeing the powerful Interior docket.

Addressing Deputy President Gachagua directly, Makarina said, “Prof. Kindiki is the only leader we are left with after the exit of PNU Chair Peter Munya, veteran Kiraitu Murungi, and more recently Mithika Linturi. Why is our son Kindiki being left out of the caravan that has been going round in the Mount Kenya region? The Mountain will only remain united if you, Hon Gachagua, will recognize and accord our son Kindiki the status he deserves.”

Makarina further expressed his intent to organize a peace caravan, which he has dubbed the “Unity of the Mountain,” aimed at fostering cohesion among the region’s leaders. He cautioned against internal divisions, stating, “Yes, we acknowledge you’re a Son of the Mountain, but that doesn’t give you the go-ahead to enter even into your brother (Kindiki’s) bedroom.”

As the Mount Kenya region continues to navigate its political future, Makarina’s call for inclusivity and respect among leaders is a timely reminder of the delicate balance required to maintain unity in one of Kenya’s most politically significant areas.
