Following mounting public complaints about raw sewage contaminating the Nairobi River at City Park, the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) has taken swift action.
Led by Director General Mamo B Mamo, EBS, the NEMA team visited the affected site and immediately directed the Nairobi City Water and Sewerage Company (NCWSC) to repair a malfunctioning manhole that was discharging effluent into the river.
The incident has drawn the attention of the Cabinet Secretary for Environment, Climate Change, and Forestry, Hon. Aden Duale, EGH, who has ordered NEMA to map all effluent discharge points along the Nairobi River ecosystem. He has instructed the agency to take immediate enforcement actions to address any pollution sources identified.
In response, Director General Mamo has issued a 24-hour ultimatum to the NCWSC to repair the broken sewer lines at several key locations, including City Park, Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH), Kirichwa Kubwa, and a discharging manhole in Kangemi. This directive follows NCWSC’s failure to comply with a previously issued restoration order by NEMA.
The DG emphasized that NEMA will take strict action against any entity found to be polluting the environment, including prosecuting those who fail to comply with the agency’s directives. “We will not tolerate any negligence that leads to environmental degradation. The health and well-being of our citizens and the preservation of our natural resources are paramount,” said Mamo.
NEMA’s decisive action highlights the government’s commitment to enforcing environmental laws and protecting the Nairobi River ecosystem from further pollution. The public has been encouraged to continue reporting any environmental violations to ensure swift intervention and accountability.
