The Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) has issued a stern warning to the government, demanding the immediate implementation of the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) or facing a nationwide teachers’ strike.
The union, led by National Chairman Patrick Karinga Munuhe, has expressed frustration over the government’s repeated failure to honor agreements, leaving teachers in financial distress amid tough economic conditions.
In a recent interview, Munuhe made it clear that teachers are no longer interested in further negotiations, which have often resulted in unfulfilled promises. “All the teacher wants to hear is that the money has been deposited into the account. Nothing less,” he stated, emphasizing the urgency of the situation.
Munuhe criticized the government for its continued delays in implementing the CBA, questioning the difficulty in fulfilling an agreement that would ensure smooth learning across the country. He highlighted the vulnerability of teachers, who have endured unkept promises, particularly in the current economic climate.
The union has set a firm deadline, warning that if the government does not act by August 25th, all teachers will down their tools starting from 12:01 am on August 26th. “Several CBAs have been left unattended, and we have been given false promises,” Munuhe added, underscoring the union’s resolve to see the CBA implemented without further delay.
The potential strike could disrupt the education sector, affecting millions of students across Kenya. The union’s leadership has called on the government to act swiftly, urging officials to prioritize the welfare of teachers to avoid the looming crisis.
