The Principal Secretary for the State Department of Shipping and Maritime Affairs, Geoffrey Kaituko, announced the success of a recent tour in Kisumu County, led by Cabinet Secretary Hassan Ali Joho. The team was warmly received by Kisumu Governor Prof. Anyang’ Nyong’o, with whom they held a courtesy call before embarking on a series of key site visits.
The tour included visits to Ogal and Asat beaches in Kisumu West and Seme Constituencies, where ultra-modern fish landing sites are set to be constructed. These developments are part of the government’s broader strategy to enhance the fishing industry and boost the local economy through improved infrastructure.
The final stop on the tour was the proposed Kenya Lake Victoria Regional Maritime Communication and Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC), a critical facility that will enhance maritime safety and communication across the Lake Victoria region.
The delegation included Deputy Governor Dr. Matthew Owili, Principal Secretary for Fisheries and the Blue Economy Betsy Njagi, Seme MP Dr. James Nyikal, Kisumu West MP Roza Buyu, and Kisumu Woman Representative Ruth Odinga. Their presence underscored the importance of these initiatives for the local community and the region’s maritime future.
This visit marks a significant step towards realizing Kisumu’s potential as a hub for maritime activities, with the upcoming projects expected to create jobs, improve safety, and foster sustainable development in the region.
