The Kenya Medical Supplies Agency (KEMSA) witnessed a significant leadership transition this morning as the immediate former Chairman, Irungu Nyakera, officially handed over the reins to the incoming Chairman, former Narok County Governor Samuel Tunai. The event marks the end of Nyakera’s 15-month tenure, during which he spearheaded substantial reforms aimed at transforming the health parastatal.
In his remarks, Nyakera highlighted the achievements under his leadership, emphasizing the strides made in various key areas, including Human Resources (HR) reforms, stakeholder engagement, and operational efficiency. “In the 15 months I have been chair, we have truly transformed KEMSA on HR Reforms, Stakeholder engagements, Order Fill Rate, Turn Around Time, Public Image and brand, ERP implementation, donor confidence, integrity of procurement and overall KEMSA’s stand as a critical parastatal delivering government reforms,” said Nyakera.
Nyakera expressed his confidence in the new leadership and extended his best wishes to Chairman Tunai and the board. “I wish Chairman Tunai and his board all the best as they carry on the reforms we started,” he stated.
Reflecting on his tenure, Nyakera noted that KEMSA had regained its stature as a critical agency in the delivery of government health reforms. He attributed these successes to a collective effort in restoring donor confidence, enhancing the integrity of procurement processes, and improving the agency’s public image.
As Nyakera moves on to his next role, he expressed enthusiasm about his new position as Chairman of the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC), where he plans to bring the same energy and reform agenda that characterized his time at KEMSA.
The transition at KEMSA comes at a crucial time as the agency continues to play a pivotal role in Kenya’s healthcare system. Incoming Chairman Samuel Tunai will be tasked with sustaining the momentum of reforms and further strengthening the agency’s capacity to deliver essential medical supplies across the country.
