Mandera South Member of Parliament, Hon. Abdul Haro Kore, has emphasized the need for a collaborative and issue-focused approach to resolve the deep-rooted conflicts between the Garre and Degodia clans in Banissa sub-county, along the Kenya-Ethiopia border. These disputes, which have persisted for over a decade, have defied numerous peace efforts due to their complex nature.

Speaking after the latest flare-up in the region, Hon. Kore detailed the swift action taken by local leaders following a horrific incident in Boho, Malkamarri, Ethiopia, where an entire family was tragically wiped out. The incident, which occurred just across the border, had the potential to escalate into widespread violence and displacement.

“Our immediate response was not aimed at resolving the conflict that has plagued the region for the past 11 years,” Hon. Kore explained. “Instead, we went to Banissa and Malkamarri to offer our condolences to the bereaved families and to plead for calm as we plan to initiate a thorough and lasting resolution process in the coming days.”

Hon. Kore underscored the importance of addressing the core issues at the heart of the conflict, rather than focusing on personal attacks or blaming communities. “Personal attacks on any leader or community are ineffective and toxic. We must instead focus on problem-solving and collaborative approaches,” he stated.

The MP also expressed gratitude to the Garre and Degodia communities for their responsiveness to de-escalation efforts and for maintaining peace despite the challenging circumstances. He called on all parties involved to remain committed to finding a lasting solution that prioritizes peace and coexistence.

As the leadership in Mandera County prepares to launch a new conflict resolution initiative, there is hope that this fresh approach will finally bring an end to the violence and pave the way for sustainable peace in the region.
