Progress on Fluorspar Processing Plant Revival Reviewed by the Mining Ministry

The ongoing revival of the Fluorspar Processing Plant in Keiyo South Constituency, Elgeyo Marakwet County, has shown significant progress, according to a recent briefing provided to top government officials.

The project, led by SOFAX Fluorspar Kenya Ltd, is being executed at an initial cost of KSh 4.8 billion and aims to restore the once-thriving mineral processing industry in the region.

Principal Secretary for Mining, Elijah Mwangi, and Cabinet Secretary for Mining, Hon. Mohammed Elmi, accompanied by H.E. Hassan Ali Joho, held a meeting with officials from SOFAX Fluorspar Kenya Ltd to assess the project’s development. The officials were updated on the geological and environmental studies conducted, as well as the operational aspects of the processing plant.

Expressing his satisfaction with the progress, CS Elmi emphasized the importance of ensuring that the benefits of the project extend to the local community. “This revival is a testament to our commitment to reforming the mining sector and promoting mineral investments that prioritize value addition in Kenya,” he said. He underscored the need for the project to create employment opportunities, utilize local materials, and invest in community empowerment programs.

The Fluorspar Processing Plant, which was officially handed over to SOFAX Fluorspar Kenya Ltd on June 30, 2024, is on track for its first shipment of fluorspar by March 2025, marking a significant milestone in its operationalization.

The revival of this plant is a key element in the government’s broader strategy to enhance the mining sector’s contribution to the national economy. By focusing on value addition and local community involvement, the government aims to ensure that such projects lead to sustainable economic growth in the region.

Senior officials from the State Department for Mining were also present during the meeting, reflecting the government’s strong commitment to the successful completion of the project. The local community remains optimistic about the job opportunities and economic benefits that the revived plant will bring to the region.
