A team led by Madam Stella, the Deputy Manager of Lugari Constituency, paid a visit to Mukonge Primary and Secondary Schools as part of ongoing efforts to assess and address the needs of educational institutions in the area. The visit, organized under the leadership of Hon. Nabii Nabwera, aimed to evaluate the current state of the schools and discuss strategies for improvement.
Mukonge Primary School: Challenges and Opportunities
Mukonge Primary School currently enrolls a total of 500 students, comprising 260 primary students, 120 Junior Secondary School (JSS) students, and 120 Early Childhood Development (ECD) students. However, the school faces several challenges, including a lack of a head teacher and insufficient teaching staff. The school operates with only four Teachers Service Commission (TSC) teachers, two Board of Management (BOM) teachers, and one JSS teacher.
A significant concern highlighted during the visit was the school’s failure to receive JSS capitation funds due to issues with the National Education Management Information System (NEMIS). This has hindered the school’s ability to provide adequate resources for its students.
Infrastructure-wise, Mukonge Primary School has sufficient classrooms, though many require renovation due to deteriorating walls. While the girls have adequate toilet facilities, the boys’ toilets are limited, with only two functional doors. However, former students have stepped in to construct a new six-door toilet for the boys. Teachers currently have access to a two-door toilet facility, one for male staff and one for female staff.
Madam Stella and her team agreed to meet with the former students to discuss and advise on the various issues affecting the school, emphasizing the importance of community involvement in improving the school’s infrastructure and resources.
Mukonge Secondary School: Positive Developments Amidst Low Enrollment
Mukonge Secondary School, with an enrollment of 138 students (92 boys and 36 girls), presents a contrasting picture. The school’s infrastructure is in good condition, with sufficient toilets, classrooms, and a newly constructed laboratory. Despite the relatively low student population, the school’s Principal affirmed that “Mukonge is in good shape.”
Hon. Nabii Nabwera is actively working to revitalize both Mukonge Primary and Secondary Schools, with plans to address the challenges identified during the visit. The visit underscores the commitment of the constituency leadership to improving the educational facilities and ensuring that students have access to quality education.
As part of the ongoing efforts, the leadership team is focused on mobilizing resources, engaging with stakeholders, and implementing strategic interventions that will enhance the learning environment and support the overall development of Mukonge Schools.
