Kilifi, Kenya, September 2024 — Excitement is building as preparations for the annual Chenda Chenda festival reach their peak. This year’s cultural extravaganza is set to take place on September 9th, 2024, at Kaya Fungo in Kaloleni, Kilifi County. The festival, celebrated by the Mijikenda community, promises to be a vibrant display of traditional music, dance, and cultural heritage.

Kilifi County Assembly Speaker, Hon. Teddy Mwambire, has called on Kenyans and the global community to join in the festivities. “The Chenda Chenda festival is more than just a cultural event; it is an opportunity for unity and reflection among the Mijikenda people,” said Hon. Mwambire. He emphasized the importance of the event in bringing together the nine sub-groups of the Mijikenda community, and highlighted that the Kaya elders will use the occasion to address crucial issues and outline plans for regional development.

The term “Chenda” is derived from the Mijikenda language and means “nine,” reflecting the festival’s deep-rooted connection to the nine sub-tribes of the Mijikenda people. These sub-tribes—Giriama, Chonyi, Rabai, Ribe, Jibana, Kambe, Kauma, Duruma, and Digo—are integral to the Mijikenda community, which is comprised of 216 clans.

The Chenda Chenda festival, spearheaded by the Coastal Kaya Elders and supported by various stakeholders, is dedicated to preserving and promoting positive cultural practices. The event features traditional music, dance performances, and activities aimed at fostering cultural appreciation among the younger generation. It also serves as a platform for advocating for girl child education, supporting the elderly, and preserving valued cultural traditions.

“This festival is a celebration of our rich heritage and a reaffirmation of our commitment to cultural diversity and unity,” said Hon. Mwambire. “We invite everyone to join us in honoring our traditions and supporting the positive initiatives associated with this event.”

As the festival approaches, preparations are in full swing to ensure a memorable and impactful celebration. The Chenda Chenda festival stands as a testament to the Mijikenda community’s dedication to cultural preservation and the promotion of social values.
