The M-PESA Foundation, in partnership with the University of Embu, has launched a comprehensive Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) scholarship programme. This initiative is set to benefit 1,300 young people from all 47 counties across the country.
The scholarship programme, which will fully cover tuition fees and provide a monthly stipend for accommodation and upkeep, is designed to equip youth with practical skills in various specialized fields. The courses offered under the programme include craft certificates, diplomas, and other qualifications in areas such as cosmetology, building and construction, mobile and electronic repairs, electrical installation and maintenance, advanced welding, culinary arts, and information technology.
Speaking at the launch, Nicholas Kamunyu, a trustee of the Safaricom Foundation, emphasized the importance of providing access to education and training that can open doors to economic empowerment for the youth. “We are pleased to partner with the University of Embu to launch this TVET Scholarship Programme in recognition that we need to provide access to education and comprehensive training that will empower our youth to access opportunities for economic empowerment,” he said.
In the initial phase, the programme will recruit 400 youth from 10 counties, including Embu, Meru, Tharaka Nithi, Nairobi, Murang’a, Nyandarua, Nakuru, Homa Bay, Nyamira, and Turkana. To qualify, applicants must be between 15 and 30 years old. Application forms are available online at the University of Embu’s website or at select Safaricom Shops within the targeted counties. The application deadline is 7th October 2024.
Professor David Mugendi, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Embu, highlighted the programme’s focus on aligning training with current market demands. “The scholarships we are launching today will provide access to a diverse range of programs which have been carefully selected to align with current market demands. Many of these skills are what we often associate with blue-collar jobs, but let us not underestimate their value. These are the foundational skills that drive industries, boost productivity, and create pathways to meaningful employment,” he stated.
As part of the initiative, the M-PESA Foundation also broke ground on a series of construction and renovation projects aimed at establishing a TVET Centre of Excellence at the University of Embu. The new facilities will include specialized centers for phone and computer repairs, cosmetology, an automotive workshop, a cafeteria, and a Black Soldier Fly farming initiative.
This programme is seen as a game-changer for Kenya’s youth, particularly those from disadvantaged backgrounds, by providing them with the skills and opportunities needed to secure employment both locally and internationally.
