Korogocho, Nairobi — Thursday, September 12, 2024 — President William Samoei Ruto today officiated the launch of the Climate WorX Mtaani initiative, a major climate action and livelihoods program aimed at engaging approximately 200,000 youth in environmental sustainability projects across the country. The launch event took place in Korogocho, Nairobi County.

The Climate WorX Mtaani initiative is a national government’s response to pressing environmental challenges and is set to begin on October 1, 2024, in Nairobi, before extending to other major cities including Mombasa, Kisumu, Eldoret, and Nakuru. The program will provide opportunities for young people to participate in clean-up efforts, tree planting, and other environmental sustainability activities while generating income.

During the launch, President Ruto emphasized the need to prioritize the clean-up of the Nairobi River, particularly focusing on efforts already underway in Korogocho. He applauded the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) and its collaboration with Komb Green Solutions, a community-based organization in Korogocho, for their ongoing work in rehabilitating sections of the Nairobi River.

The President also issued a stern warning to polluters, highlighting that the “Polluter Pays Principle” would be strictly enforced. Industries and agencies found responsible for pollution will be held accountable and required to bear the cost of cleaning up the rivers. He urged businesses to adopt best practices that protect the environment and keep waterways clean.

The event was attended by several dignitaries, including Cabinet Secretary for Environment, Climate Change, and Forestry, Hon. Aden Duale, along with Principal Secretaries Dr. Eng. Festus Ng’eno (Environment and Climate Change), Gitonga Mugambi (Forestry), Dr. Raymond Omollo (Internal Security and National Administration), Teresia Mbaika (Devolution), and Charles Hinga (Housing and Urban Development). UN Resident Coordinator in Kenya, Dr. Stephen Jackson, and NEMA Chairman Emilio Mugo, alongside NEMA Director General Mamo B. Mamo, were also present.

The Climate WorX Mtaani initiative is set to contribute significantly to Kenya’s efforts to tackle climate change while creating job opportunities for the youth and fostering community involvement in environmental protection.
