Kenya, recognized as a regional leader in tea production and export, welcomed the Ethiopian delegation with the aim of fostering closer economic ties. The visit highlights the growing interest from Ethiopia, the fourth-largest economy in Sub-Saharan Africa, which is projected to become the third-largest by 2025, surpassing Angola. This economic growth underscores the potential for increased collaboration between Kenya and Ethiopia.

The delegation’s interest in Kenya’s tea industry is part of a broader effort to learn from successful practices and explore opportunities for trade expansion. Kenya’s tea industry is known for its stringent quality control and sustainable practices, setting a benchmark in the global market.

Ethiopia, which is already a significant player in agro-based industries such as leather, coffee, bamboo products, natural gum, and flowers, is keen to expand its manufacturing sector. Currently contributing only 4% to its GDP, Ethiopia is looking to enhance this sector as part of its economic growth strategy.

The combined market of Kenya and Ethiopia, totaling 125 million people with a combined GDP of USD 67 billion, presents substantial opportunities for economic cooperation. The two countries are exploring ways to leverage their respective strengths to benefit both economies.

During the visit, discussions centered on how Kenya’s expertise in tea production could be applied to Ethiopian practices, potentially boosting Ethiopia’s own tea industry. Additionally, the exchange of knowledge and best practices in sustainability and quality control could pave the way for future collaborations and investments.

The visit is seen as a significant step towards strengthening economic relations between Kenya and Ethiopia, with potential benefits for both countries. As Ethiopia continues to grow its manufacturing sector, opportunities for increased trade and investment with Kenya are likely to expand, further solidifying the economic partnership between the two nations.
