Nairobi, September 12, 2024 – Principal Secretary for Mining, Elijah Mwangi, held a strategic meeting with the Vision 2030 Board Chair, Dr. Emmanuel Nzai, to discuss the mining sector’s contribution to Kenya’s socio-economic growth as part of the Vision 2030 development agenda.
The productive session focused on the sector’s role in empowering communities and supporting the government’s Bottom-up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA).
Mining has been identified as a key pillar in Kenya’s Medium-Term Plan IV (MTP IV) under Vision 2030, with significant potential to drive economic transformation. PS Mwangi highlighted that the sector has achieved notable milestones through the establishment of mineral processing and value addition centers in counties such as Kakamega, Vihiga, Taita-Taveta, and Elgeyo Marakwet. These initiatives have accelerated value addition, contributing to the overall economic growth.
Furthermore, the sector has supported the formation of marketing cooperatives for artisanal miners across all 47 counties, an intervention aimed at promoting the growth of small-scale mining and empowering local communities. “These cooperatives are part of a broader effort to ensure that miners benefit directly from their work, fostering economic independence,” said Mwangi.
During the meeting, the need to review the metrics used to evaluate the mining sector’s contribution to the economy was emphasized. Dr. Nzai and PS Mwangi agreed on the importance of assessing the impact of community-centered projects and refining strategies to ensure they align with Vision 2030’s long-term goals.
Dr. Nzai also called for the rationalization and prioritization of mapping high-impact projects to enhance the monitoring and evaluation of Vision 2030’s Program Implementation Plans. “Effective tracking of these projects is critical to ensuring we meet our targets and continue driving national development,” he said.
As the mining sector continues to expand, the discussions underscored its critical role in empowering local communities and advancing Kenya’s economic transformation agenda. Both parties expressed optimism about the future, reiterating their commitment to ensuring that the sector delivers sustainable benefits to all stakeholders.
Vision 2030 remains the guiding framework for Kenya’s long-term development, with a focus on transforming the country into a globally competitive and prosperous nation. The engagement between the Ministry of Mining and Vision 2030 is expected to drive further progress toward these ambitious goals.
