Ndia, Kirinyaga County — In a grand centenary celebration, Our Lady of Sorrows Baricho Catholic Parish in Ndia, Kirinyaga County, marked 100 years of nurturing and growing the faith of its congregation. The milestone event was a moment of reflection on the Parish’s immense contribution to the spiritual, social, and educational development of the local community.
The centennial celebration, led by the Very Reverend Charles Kibe, the Vicar General of the Diocese of Murang’a, featured a Holy Mass in honor of the Parish’s century-long commitment to service and worship. Reverend Kibe emphasized the Parish’s instrumental role in promoting faith, good governance, and community welfare through strategic investments in education, healthcare, and social amenities.
The Catholic Church in Kenya, including Baricho Catholic Parish, has played a significant role in establishing schools, hospitals, and other social institutions that have complemented the government’s service delivery efforts for decades.
Among the prominent guests at the event were Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru, her deputy David Githanda, Secretary to the Cabinet Mercy Wanjau, and Ndia MP George Kariuki, who hosted the event. Other leaders in attendance included Senator Kamau Murango, Woman Representative Jane Njeri, Kiambu Senator Karungo wa Thang’wa, Embakasi North MP James Gakuya, Nominated MP Teresiah Wanjiru, as well as several MCAs led by Kirinyaga Speaker Murimi Muteti and Majority Leader Muriithi Kibinga.
Governor Waiguru expressed her heartfelt congratulations to the Parish, acknowledging its selfless service to humanity and dedication to the worship of God over the past century. “The Catholic Church has remained instrumental in fostering education, healthcare, and overall community development, making a lasting impact on the lives of many Kenyans,” she said.
The centenary celebrations served as a reminder of the Church’s ongoing commitment to spiritual growth, social development, and service to humanity as the faithful gathered to reflect on the journey and achievements of the Parish over the last 100 years.
