—In a united outcry, community leaders and organizations have condemned the recent act of gender-based violence (GBV) against nominated MCA Hon. Joy Muthoni Mwangi.
The disturbing incident occurred on September 9, 2024, in Jada A, Komarock Ward, when Hon. Muthoni was physically assaulted by elected MCA Hon. Chris Wanjohi Mtumishi during an inspection of a field water project.
The attack took place at the same location where Muthoni had previously overseen the installation of floodlights as part of a community development initiative last year.
Leaders are now calling for immediate and decisive action, demanding a thorough investigation and legal accountability for Hon. Mtumishi. This is the second time Hon. Muthoni has been assaulted by the same individual, highlighting the ongoing dangers faced by women in leadership positions.
“This isn’t just an attack on Joy; it’s an attack on the dignity of women and their rightful place in leadership,” said a representative from one of the supporting organizations.
In a joint statement, leaders expressed their shock and disappointment over the lack of protection for Hon. Muthoni and called for better enforcement of laws protecting women from violence.
“Gender-based violence is not just a personal attack; it is a systemic issue that continues to plague our society,” the statement read.
The organizations involved emphasized that GBV is a grave violation of human rights and called for stronger legal protections, adequate funding for survivor support services, and the promotion of public awareness about the severity and prevalence of GBV.
In addition to legal action, the statement also called for immediate support for Hon. Muthoni, including counseling, legal assistance, and security to ensure her safety in her line of duty.
“It is deeply troubling that a public servant can be attacked multiple times, and the system does little to ensure her protection,” said one of the coalition leaders.
They emphasized that Hon. Muthoni should be provided with all necessary resources, and urged the relevant authorities to act swiftly to prevent any further incidents.
As the nation grapples with increasing cases of GBV, this particular incident sends a chilling message to the community. “We must come together to not only support the survivor but to change the systems that allow such violence to continue,” the statement concluded.
The leaders reaffirmed their dedication to advocating for all GBV victims, promoting human rights, and pushing for systematic change that will lead to a world free from violence and discrimination. “Justice for Hon. Joy Muthoni is justice for all women,” the statement asserted, vowing to continue the fight until justice is served.
