Kisumu, 18th September 2024 – The Boda Boda Association of Kenya (BAK) has launched a major initiative aimed at addressing the increasing theft of motorbikes in the Nyanza region. The association, in collaboration with key partners including the national police, is taking decisive steps to dismantle organized syndicates involved in motorbike thefts that often smuggle stolen bikes across the border into Uganda and Tanzania.
During a recent event in Kisumu, BAK President Kevin Mubadi expressed deep concern over the escalating number of motorbike thefts targeting boda boda riders. He noted that many of the criminals pose as customers, only to steal the bikes from unsuspecting riders. Mubadi emphasized the need for enhanced security measures and heightened community awareness to combat this menace.
“These motorbikes are our livelihoods. Many of us have worked hard to buy them, while others have acquired them through loans. We must take every legal measure to protect our assets from these syndicates. Our partnership with the police and Watu will help us respond quickly to theft attempts, protecting both our property and our lives,” said Mr. Mubadi.
Watu, a leading provider of financial services to boda boda riders, is playing a critical role in the fight against theft by introducing advanced tracking systems and security devices for motorbikes. “These technologies are crucial for tracking stolen bikes and preventing future thefts,” explained Watu Regional Manager for Kisumu, Len Ogolla.
Kisumu County Commissioner Benson Leparmorijo reaffirmed the county’s commitment to tackling the issue. He announced plans to enhance police patrols and investigation techniques, as well as ensure prompt police action on theft cases. However, Leparmorijo also cautioned boda boda riders against engaging in criminal activities or endangering the lives of other road users.
“We will double police patrols in high-risk areas, improve our investigation techniques, and work closely with boda boda stage chairpersons to gather first-hand information that will lead to the arrest of perpetrators,” said Leparmorijo.
The BAK initiative includes several key strategies aimed at combating motorbike theft:
- Community policing in collaboration with boda boda stage chairpersons.
- Increased police patrols in areas prone to theft to deter criminal activity.
- Rapid response teams to ensure swift action when thefts occur.
The County Boda Boda Association office will also be conducting regular safety sensitization seminars for riders and launching community awareness campaigns. These efforts are aimed at encouraging riders and local residents to support law enforcement agencies and work together to reduce crime in the region.
This initiative marks a crucial step in protecting the livelihoods of boda boda riders while improving overall safety in Kisumu County.
