Kitale, 18th September 2024 – The National Land Commission (NLC) has launched a five-day series of investigative hearings into historical land injustice (HLI) claims made by indigenous communities, beginning with the Ogiek community from Bungoma, Trans Nzoia, and Elgeyo Marakwet Counties. The hearings, which commenced this week at the Kitale Museum, are being led by NLC Commissioners Prof. James Tuitoek, Hon. Esther Mathenge, Hon. Tiya Galgalo, and Commissioner Hubbie, alongside the NLC HLI Secretariat.
The focus of these hearings is to investigate and resolve historical land grievances not only from the Ogiek community but also from related groups such as the Sabaot, Kony, Bungomek, Sengwer, Elgon Masai, and Cherang’any communities. Specific land claims under examination include disputes over Kiboroa Forest in Mt. Elgon and Sinen Glade in Embobut Forest, among others.
The Commission is committed to a thorough and transparent examination of all claims presented, ensuring justice is served to these marginalized communities. The hearings will continue until September 20, 2024.
This process is part of NLC’s broader mandate to address historical land injustices across Kenya, with a particular focus on the rightful claims of indigenous and forest-dwelling communities who have long faced displacement and marginalization. The outcomes of these hearings will play a significant role in resolving longstanding disputes and restoring land rights to affected communities.
