Kiambu, Kenya — Friday, September 22, 2024
The Cabinet Secretary for Sports, Hon.Kipchumba Murkomen, on Friday conducted an inspection of Kirigiti Stadium to assess the progress of its renovation, expressing optimism about the facility’s nearing completion. During the tour, the CS emphasized the importance of sports infrastructure in developing talent and ensuring sustainable livelihoods for youth in Kenya.
“Sports infrastructure is crucial for talent development and in ensuring sustainable livelihoods,” said the CS. “As a ministry, we are dedicated to delivering these facilities to help our youth develop their talents and monetise their skills.”
The CS noted significant progress in the stadium’s development but highlighted that key areas still need to be finalised, including the installation of seating, setting up of technology infrastructure, and completion of the playing field.
Kirigiti Stadium, which holds historical significance as the venue where Kenya’s founding father, Mzee Jomo Kenyatta, addressed his final rally before his detention, is poised to become an important hub for sports and youth empowerment. “It’s our desire that in this stadium, our youth will find their socio-economic liberation,” added the CS.
The CS plans to meet with Sports Kenya to discuss the completion date, review financing, and expedite approvals to ensure the four-year wait for the stadium’s completion can finally end.
In addition to providing a space for sporting events, Kirigiti Stadium is being designed with economic sustainability in mind. The CS noted the stadium’s potential to generate revenue through spaces that can be monetised, inviting the private sector to invest in the facility and other sporting infrastructure nationwide.
Area MP Machua Waithaka and Kiambu County Sports CEC Ali Korar accompanied the CS during the inspection tour.
