Embakasi East Member of Parliament Babu Owino has condemned the national government for the ongoing demolition of houses in the Mradi area, which he claims has left many constituents homeless. In a passionate statement shared on his social media platforms on September 24, 2024, Owino expressed his concern over the plight of families affected by the demolitions.
“It’s sad to see my people left homeless; it pains me to witness children, women, and men losing their homes,” he lamented. Owino highlighted the contradiction in government actions, pointing out that while authorities promote affordable housing initiatives, they simultaneously allow demolitions in Mradi.
The demolitions follow a tragic gas explosion on February 2, 2024, that resulted in significant injuries and fatalities. The explosion, caused by a gas lorry at a suspected unauthorized station, ignited a massive fire that spread to surrounding buildings, injuring over 60 individuals and claiming lives due to severe burn injuries.
In response to the disaster, President William Ruto ordered immediate investigations, which led to multiple arrests and the closure of the unauthorized gas facility. Owino’s statements reflect a growing frustration among constituents facing displacement and highlight the urgent need for a balanced approach to housing and safety.
