Nairobi, Kenya — September 26, 2024 — The Kenyan government has taken swift action to prioritize the safety and security of both local and foreign tourists, announcing an enhancement in the deployment of the Tourist Police Unit (TPU). This move, announced by the Ministry of Interior and National Administration, is part of a broader strategy to boost tourism and ensure that Kenya remains a top destination for travelers.

In a recent memorandum of understanding signed between the Ministry of Tourism and Wildlife and the Ministry of Interior, Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki emphasized the critical role that security plays in the growth of the tourism sector. He projected that with the right security measures, Kenya could see an increase in tourist arrivals from the current 2 million to approximately 5 million by 2027.

“Security and safety of foreign and local tourists are crucial for the growth of the sector,” said CS Kindiki. “The National Police Service is enhancing the deployment of the Tourism Police Unit (TPU). The Ministry of Tourism and Wildlife, through the Tourism Fund, will support the TPU with resources for mobility, specialized capacity building programs customized to the hospitality industry, and other logistical support, while the unit remains under the operational command of the Inspector General of Police.”

Tourism and Wildlife Cabinet Secretary Rebecca Miano highlighted that revamping the TPU is part of her broader strategy to ensure tourists can visit Kenya with confidence in their safety. “My appeal to Kenyans, wherever they are, is to work closely with our Tourist Police Unit to ensure that offenders looking to disrupt our tourism industry are kept at bay,” Miano stated.

Miano further explained that the Tourist Police Unit was established specifically for the tourism sector to address crimes related to tourists, provide escorts, patrol key tourist areas, and protect visitors from harassment. This initiative reflects Kenya’s strong commitment to safeguarding its tourism industry, a crucial pillar of the nation’s economy.

In related efforts to enhance security, Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua recently announced plans to bolster security in Lamu County, a popular tourist region. The region has been a target for terrorist activities, but Gachagua assured that the government is intensifying its efforts to combat these threats, aiming to make Lamu and other coastal areas safer for tourists.

“Lamu County has long been a battleground for terrorists. They have had their way, but moving forward, it will no longer be business as usual,” Gachagua stated, emphasizing the government’s resolve to protect key tourist destinations from security threats.

With these measures in place, the government hopes to not only protect the tourism sector but also significantly increase the number of visitors to Kenya, further boosting the country’s economy.
