Nairobi, Kenya — September 26, 2024 — The Parliamentary Service Commission Committee on Information and Public Communication, together with the National Assembly Committee on Parliamentary Broadcasting and Library, convened a critical meeting today to strategize on enhancing public participation in parliamentary proceedings through improved broadcasting initiatives.
Co-chaired by Hon. Mishi Mboko and Hon. Daniel Nanok, the meeting underscored the essential role that broadcasting plays in promoting transparency and civic engagement. The Committees reviewed the current state of parliamentary broadcasting infrastructure, identifying both challenges and opportunities for upgrading the system in a cost-effective manner that would expand public access to parliamentary debates.
Reflecting on the history of the Parliamentary Broadcasting Unit, established in 2008, the Committees acknowledged the progress made through various upgrades, including equipment donations and collaborative efforts. However, they also recognized the pressing need for further modernization. A key point of discussion was the potential of establishing dedicated parliamentary radio stations to strengthen the connection between Parliament and the public.
The Committees committed to closely collaborating on the development of a state-of-the-art broadcasting infrastructure that aligns with the vision of a democratic, people-centered Parliament. This initiative is seen as crucial for ensuring that parliamentary proceedings are more accessible to the public, thereby fostering a more informed and engaged citizenry.
